UMSL

Creative juices flow at UMSL

St. Louis is home to a burgeoning visual arts scene and the University of Missouri–St. Louis is a part of it. The Department of Art and Art History at UMSL is connected to most of the area’s major art institutions, including the St. Louis Art Museum, Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis Artists’ Guild and Contemporary Art Museum. Internships are available at each of those, as well as UMSL’s Gallery 210.

The department offers a bachelor’s degree in art history and a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in one of several concentrations: art education, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking and general fine arts.

Students also have opportunities to exhibit their work at one of UMSL’s several galleries or help curate or promote an exhibit at Gallery 210 or Gallery Visio.

Whatever your interest is in the visual arts, chances are UMSL’s got you covered.

Comprehensive university: wide range of offerings

The University of Missouri-St. Louis is one of four campuses of the University of Missouri System. It was founded in 1963 to educate St. Louis’s professionals through research, coursework and hands-on experiences in the region’s businesses, schools, hospitals, agencies and the arts. Today, the university’s mission remains largely the same: to provide excellent learning experiences and leadership opportunities for a diverse student body. Outstanding faculty and staff, innovative research and creative partnerships foster synergies that advance the welfare of our stakeholders and benefit the global society.

UMSL’s 10 schools and colleges offer 94 degree programs, many of which have achieved national ranking. The university’s academic units include:

College of Arts and Sciences
The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest and most diverse college at UMSL.  Students participate in a community of scholars that promotes excellence in teaching, critical thinking skills, collaborative learning, and strong research and scholarship across a range of disciplines.

College of Business Administration
Through its degree programs, the college expands student capability in communication, analysis, and judgment, enabling its graduates to deal effectively with today’s complex economic environment.

College of Education
Consistently among the top institutions in the state in preparation of educators, the college’s programs emphasize state-of-the-art technological applications to enhance teaching and learning as well as collaboration among university, school, agency, and corporate partners.

College of Fine Arts and Communication
Faculty, students, and alumni of the college have distinguished themselves as scholars, visual artists, teachers, and performers. The university’s Touhill Performing Arts Center provides two world-class venues for performances. In addition, three galleries on campus offer space for display of student and faculty artwork as well as visiting exhibitions.

Graduate School
UMSL’s graduate programs reflect the campus’s mission as a public metropolitan research university: our faculty and students’ scholarship advances understanding of their disciplines in rapidly changing local, regional, and global contexts.

UMSL/Washington University Joint Undergraduate Engineering Program
A joint effort of the two of the region’s top universities, the program offers bachelor of science degrees in mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering. Students who enter the program take about half of their course work at UMSL. The remaining program consists of engineering courses and laboratories taken at Washington University.

Division of Continuing Education
Continuing Education provides a wide variety of credit courses and noncredit professional development programs that help adults keep abreast of new developments in their field, prepare them for a career in a new field of endeavor, or enrich their personal and family life.

Take it to the stage

If performance is your thing, you’ll find that opportunities abound for you to take your talents to the stage at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

The Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL, one of the St. Louis region’s premiere performance venues, hosts about 100 shows a year on two stages: the Anheusher-Busch Performance Hall and E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater. About half of those feature national and international touring musicians, dance troupes, operas, musicals and comedians. For the remainder, our student performers take the stage for jazz, classical, percussion and vocal concerts, as well as theater and dance productions.

UMSL is also home to several resident performing artists, including the acclaimed Arianna String Quartet and Modern American Dance Company and professional actors, directors and musicians. Our students learn from and share the stage with these artists.

A master’s degree to fit any hectic schedule

Earning a master’s degree in Business Administration is a great accomplishment. But not everyone has the time to achieve this goal in the traditional classroom setting. That’s why the University of Missouri–St. Louis has three types of MBA programs, one to fit any schedule. There’s no excuse. From the busy, full-time working parent needing night classes to the professional needing online courses to the student wanting to learn global business in another country, UMSL offers something for everyone.

The Evening MBA program at UMSL is designed to educate a well-rounded business professional. It’s flexible enough to accommodate anyone. The program offers the option of earning a general, broad-ranging master’s degree or the opportunity to obtain an emphasis in a specific discipline.

The Professional MBA program is a 23-month, mostly online program. Students complete most of their course work online and meet only once a month in-person on campus with the others in the program. During the monthly meetings, students have the opportunity to share projects, experiences and challenges, as well as get to know the other professionals within the program.

The International MBA program, an extension of UMSL’s top ranking undergraduate International Business Program, has created partnerships with universities in China, Japan, India, France and Austria. Students enrolled in the two-year graduate program spend the first year studying abroad. Then spend the following summer interning in the same country and return to UMSL in the fall for a year.

Small-school feel on a big campus

Students choose a university for several reasons. Some might prefer the large university experience while others are intrigued by a small liberal arts education. Maybe you can’t decide and would like a little of each. Well, at the University of Missouri–St. Louis you can have both.

UMSL is a major university located within a bustling metropolitan region. But nestled among the campus’ 350 rolling acres, you’ll find the Pierre Laclede Honors College.

We devote the entire college to our highest academic achievers. More than 500 honors students make up this tight-knit community with a student-to-instructor ratio of 13-to-1.

Our honors students are not just another face in a large, crowded lecture hall. Their professors know their names and get to know the students. They enjoy this intimate education experience while also receiving all the benefits offered by a large university.

Honors students experience instruction in small discussion seminars and one-on-one independent study, all at no additional cost. They also have the opportunity of partaking in a writing program and many opportunities for individualized research and internships.

Shaping the future through science

If you’re interested in the sciences, the University of Missouri–St. Louis is the place to be. Not only are our nationally-recognized faculty some of the top researchers in their field, but they make their students a priority. And you will get hands-on research as undergraduate. Since we’re a PhD-granting institution, that guarantees you opportunities to do more complicated research on more advanced instrumentation.

Whether you like chemical reactions, animal behavior or learning about space, UMSL has something for you.

Biology

Like to know why organisms do what they do? Biology might be your field. Our biology department’s mission is to carry out research ranging from individual molecules to global interactions between organisms and the environment. We teach students the fundamental principles of biology and help them develop their ability to think critically.

Our facilities include research and teaching laboratories, environmental chambers, greenhouses and a large array of supporting research instrumentation. And if that’s not enough, you can travel off campus to many parks, conservation areas and the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Saint Louis Zoo.

Chemistry & Biochemistry

The sky is the limit in this field. Organic, inorganic, physical, nanoscience, biochemistry – we have it. At UMSL, you’ll learn in our many research facilities, including the Center for Nanoscience. New undergraduate teaching laboratories and classrooms are currently being designed for construction next year.

The chemistry department has developed a program that makes research and teaching excellence its top priorities. Papers and publications documenting departmental research are frequently presented at conferences and symposia and published in scientific journals throughout the world. The faculty serve on national and international committees and editorial boards.

Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is devoted to providing undergraduates with a broad-based education in the fundamental concepts of physics and with the experimental and theoretical skills essential to practicing scientists. In the program, you will work to understand the fundamental nature of the forces and particles and the resultant states of matter that make up the physical world.

You’ll enjoy small class sizes and numerous research opportunities with faculty. Research stipends for the summer and academic year are available through the NASA/Missouri Space Grant Consortium.

Do the math. UMSL offers the best value

What does it mean to be a student at the University of Missouri–St. Louis? It means getting to choose from 54 bachelor’s degree programs and learning from the professor who wrote your textbook. It means an internship at Edward Jones or Barnes Jewish Hospital. It means getting to study business in China or archeology in Greece.

Best of all, it means being able to focus on your career when you’re done and not a boatload of debt!  You can get a top-ranked education, with opportunities to tap into our extensive network of partnerships, for an affordable price. Take a look at our numbers:

  • In 2010 UMSL enrolled 16,802 students. The average freshman ACT score of 23.5 tops both the Missouri and national average.
  • UMSL’s 1,447 faculty members teach and conduct research in nationally ranked programs that include biology, criminology, education, information systems, international business, nursing optometry, psychology, public policy and tropical ecology.
  • More than 65,000 UMSL alumni live and work in the region, making it the largest alumni population in the region.
  • In 2009, UMSL achieved record graduation numbers with 3,018 students earning degrees.

Do the math. A year’s tuition and fees for a full time course load is less than $10,000. That’s less than most other four-year universities in the region. Now start subtracting. Last year UMSL students received nearly $125 million in financial aid from the university and other sources.

It’s time to visit the University of Missouri–St. Louis and see for yourself.
